- Description
- Objective: To determine the perceived level of avoidance related to different communication situations experienced by Vietnamese adults who stutter. Subjects and Study methods: This pilot study explored a series of 34 cases Vietnamese adults who had a diagnosis of stuttering develop. Participants completed an online survey where they rated their level of avoidance related to certain communication situations. The degree of avoidance in the situations is presented as a percentage, the Chi-squared test was performed to compare the differences between these rates. In addition, the levels of avoidance were also scored, and situations are ranked according to the average score of avoidance. Results: More than half of the participants (55.9%) “usually” avoid the “Speaking in public” situation. This is also the situation with the highest avoidance rating while the least avoidant is “Talk with family members”. Conclusions: Vietnamese adults with stuttering tend to avoid the most in communication situations where they receive a lot of evaluation, such as public speaking, or receive an evaluation from an important communication partner, such as talking to a superior or customers, strangers, and less avoidant in situations that require little attention to words such as “talking with family members”.
